When do you need a pet sitter?

Updated: Mar 11, 2023

One of the most important reasons for homeowners to hire a pet sitter to care for their pets is that it is in the best interest of the animals. Placing pets with friends or in boarding kennels can work well, especially for dogs, as most of them are comfortable away from home. But it is unfortunately not so easy for most other types of pets. Many animals feel anxious and stressed outside their environment.

Cats, small animals, birds, fish and reptiles during the holiday

Many people keep these species as pets and they feel most comfortable in their familiar surroundings or in their own territory. For this reason, they should not be taken on holiday. Otherwise, cats, birds, rabbits, hamsters and reptiles react to a change of location with stress, which can throw their immune systems out of balance and cause health problems.

For this reason, the best alternative for most species of pets, except dogs, is to leave them in their familiar environment while their human is away and have them supervised by skilled and pet-loving care.

What does a pet sitter do?

It doesn't matter if it's a cat, a budgie or a bearded dragon! As a pet sitter, I professionally and lovingly care for all pets that don't like to travel, such as cats, rabbits, mice and rats, reptiles, fish or birds. Since I personally think all kinds of animals (except spiders!) are great, I am very happy to take care of pretty much all kinds of pets - or even chickens, goats or whatever else is kept. I'll briefly explain what the most important tasks of an animal sitter are:

Tasks of a pet sitter

My main tasks are, of course, the obvious ones such as feeding, checking and refilling water bowls and cleaning litter trays or cages and terrariums and their surroundings. Depending on the species and character of the animals, I may also play with them, groom them, or just keep them company if they are very shy cats, for example. In some cases I also provide additional services, of course by arrangement and instruction, such as administering medication, special grooming or daily exercise for dogs whose humans do not have enough time themselves. My pet taxi service is for those who don't have the time to take their pet to the vet for the annual vaccination or to take your dog to the groomer.

Advantage: home care

A big advantage of my on-site pet care is that I can also keep an eye on your home while you are away and take care of additional tasks, e.g. watering plants in the house and garden, emptying the letterbox, opening and closing the shutters to make the house look lived in and, if you wish, filling the fridge before you return so that your return to everyday life is a little less stressful. The only thing I can't do is stay overnight as I have my own animals.

It's all about trust

As I will have access to your home while you are away, one of the most important aspects of our cooperation is a good, open relationship and trust. For a first impression of me, I tell you a little more about me on my website. And before you give me a job, there is always a meeting to get to know each other - because the chemistry has to be right for everyone involved, also between human and animal. This is the perfect opportunity to tell me about your pet's needs and routine. I have a checklist with me and will of course take lots of notes. And while you are away, we will, of course, stay in touch if you wish, e.g. via WhatsApp with photos and short updates. This way you can enjoy your holiday or concentrate on your work trip.
